Global Education Design Team is looking for speaker/film proposals

Hello fellow faculty,

The Global Education Design Team is eagerly soliciting speaker proposals for this quarter and the rest of the academic year. We provide honorariums to speakers who come to campus to address issues of global relevance.

Last year's topics included a presentation about a Columbian village recovering from war; the threat a massive copper mines poses to the world’s greatest salmon run; and the spectre of global warming in the Northwest.

Recent speakers this quarter have included Lawney Reyes, Kent Wong, Alonso Chehade, and Andrew Jovilette.

This quarter, we hope yet to bring to campus a scholar who studies the perception of African-Americans in China; a speaker on Pakistan; and a humanitarian worker in Cambodia.

If you’d like to propose a speaker we should bring to campus, or have ideas about global topics important to the campus community, please attend our next meeting:

Sound Transit Update

Sound Transit's First Hill Streetcar will be operating by 2013 instead of 2016 as originally planned.

Seattle, Sound Transit execute agreement for expedited streetcar construction
The City of Seattle and Sound Transit are moving forward with plans to build a new streetcar line linking the city's First Hill neighborhood with Capitol Hill and the International District. The city and Sound Transit have executed an agreement that includes an expedited construction timeline - the line is anticipated to open in 2013 instead of the 2016 completion that was earlier planned.

Social Networking Can Help Students Engage

Social-networking tools such as Facebook and Twitter can help community college students become more engaged in their academics, a report out today finds.

But while large numbers of students say they use such tools in their daily lives, many two-year colleges have yet to mine the potential of the technology.

"The uses of social-networking tools are clearly growing in frequency," says Kay McClenney, director of the Texas-based Center for Community College Student Engagement, which released the report. But "colleges are not taking advantage of that particular set of tools for making connections with students to the extent that they could."

The report is based on a survey of more than 400,000 students from 663 institutions that assesses how much effort students invest in their studies, whether they interact with faculty and staff, and whether they are challenged by their academics. Studies show that the more engaged students are in such activities and relationships, the more likely they are to learn.

The observance of Veterans’ Day tomorrow will touch many lives across our district. Many of our faculty and staff have served in the Armed Forces, and we are seeing increasing numbers of students turning to us, especially following the implementation of the “Post-9/11 GI Bill” this summer. This new federal initiative is called the most extensive educational assistance program for veterans since the original GI Bill, which came into effect during World War II.

In recognition of the growing numbers of veterans, the State Board for Community and Technical Colleges, along with other colleges and universities across the state, have joined the Governor’s Office as “Partners for Veteran Supportive Campuses,” to increase awareness of veterans’ programs and the success of the veteran-students who join our student body.

On November 11 and throughout the year, we thank you, your families and our students who have served or are serving our country.

First Digital Photography Boot Camp

The first Digital Photography Boot Camp class was completed by 18 students (mostly faculty and staff from all of the District Colleges) September 26th-October 10th. This Saturday class, taught by Seattle Central’s own Robbie Milne (Commercial Photography), provided the students with instruction on digital camera usage and basic principles and how to edit and print photos using Adobe Lightroom software. Robbie guided the class from start to finish as the group did a photo shoot in the Arboretum, shared and edited their work in the Creative Academy labs, and ultimately developed and printed their own digital photo masterpieces, assisted by Chris Sullivan (Publishing Arts).

The BITCA Division hopes to offer another Digital Photography Boot Camp class in 2010, and is contemplating an advanced class as well, to be offered in the next year.

College Success Program’s new Off Broadway! announces playwright competition

New playwright competition to benefit foster care survivors at Seattle Central.

Playwrights! Submit your full-length script and have the opportunity to see your theatrical work presented in Seattle’s Erickson Theatre Off Broadway.

The contest is open to all playwrights. Off Broadway! is looking for unproduced full-length plays (at least two acts) that can be produced on a limited budget. Special consideration will be given to new writers. Scripts are not required to address foster care; however, plays with socially conscious subject matter will also receive special consideration.

The winning play will be fully produced by Friends of the College Success Program for a two-week run in May of 2010.

All scripts must be submitted to by November 15, 2009. Email submissions should be sent to: collegesuccess@sccd.ctc.edu. Conventional mail submissions should be sent to: Friends of the College Success Program, PO Box 20223, Seattle, WA 98102-1223.

Forty-two fifth-graders become art directors for a day at Creative Academy

Ever wonder what happens when you let a bunch of fifth-graders art direct a project involving PEZ candy dispensers?

Come find out and see the next generation of creative professionals at work.

In one day, fifth grade students from Stevens Elementary School will have the opportunity to experience hands-on some of the things people in the creative arts do as careers.

The forty-two fifth graders will be collaborating on a design, photography and printing project with eighty-two second-year students from Seattle Central’s Creative Academy.

Working in teams throughout the Academy’s labs and studios, the students will research, brainstorm, thumbnail, photograph, preflight and print the project to completion. What will the result be? Come find out.

Help develop a natural area in the Leschi neighborhood. Saturday, Nov 7th we will have new plants to put into the ground at the Leschi Natural Area overlooking Lake Washington. We start at 9am and work till 3pm, but you can choose your hours. We provide lunch and T-shirts, gloves, tools and plants. You come in sturdy shoes, grubby clothes (possibly rain gear) We could use your help. Students can earn community service credit; others could earn a positive Karma balance, possibly change your life.

Swine flu pandemic update

We are monitoring the Swine Flu pandemic closely. Currently, there are no documented cases in Washington State. Attached is information regarding Swine Flu from the Washington State Department of Health. The most important message for us all is to practice good hygiene: Wash your hands often and thoroughly, and cover your mouth when you cough.

Students, staff and faculty who are ill should stay at home. We will keep you updated if new information becomes available.

What is Swine Flu?
Swine influenza A (H1N1) virus is normally found in pigs. There are many such viruses and they rarely infect humans. The virus currently causing human illness is a new type of swine flu that has developed the ability to infect people and be transmitted from person to person.

Although this new virus is called “swine flu” it is not transmitted from eating pork products. Like other respiratory diseases, it is spread from person to person through coughs and sneezes. When people cough or sneeze, they spread germs through the air or onto surfaces that other people may touch.

Precautions and Symptoms
Infection occurs when the virus gets into someone’s airway and lungs. However, it isn’t yet known how easily the virus spreads. As with any infectious disease that is spread through the human respiratory system, health officials recommended the following precautions:

Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or
sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it;
Wash your hands with soap and water frequently, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective.
Try to avoid close contact with sick people; If you get sick, stay home and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.

These are the same precautions that should be taken to stop transmitting all influenza viruses and other viruses that are transmitted from the respiratory tract.

Human symptoms for this new type of swine flu are similar to the symptoms of the regular “seasonal” influenza that happens each year. Symptoms include fever, cough and sore throat. In addition, fatigue, lack of appetite, runny nose, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea have been reported.

Treatment
There is currently no vaccine to prevent swine flu, but there are medications to help treat it. These medicines are generally used to prevent serious flu complications such as pneumonia and work best if started soon after getting sick (within 2 days of symptoms). Whether a person with influenza needs to take one of these medicines is a decision that must be made by the patient and their health care provider.
