SEATTLE - A young man who was brutally attacked on Beacon Hill is in serious condition at the hospital on what would have been his college graduation day.
Prosecutors say 25-year-old Dawit Alemu was caught up in a robbery and a beating so vicious, he was barely alive when it was all over.So instead of receiving his degree from Seattle Central Community College on Saturday, he's fighting major injuries in the intensive care unit at Harborview Medical Center.
Despite that, the college definitely had Alemu on its mind at the graduation ceremony. Before students walked to the graduation stage, the president asked people to come together for a special prayer and remember Alemu in their thoughts."I would like for all of us to take a moment here and send up very powerful, powerful energy to Dawit today, hoping that he will improve," said Seattle Central Community College President Dr. Mildred Ollee.
Graduation was supposed to be a huge step for Alemu, who had already been accepted to the University of Washington, where he planned to continue his studies.

Does anyone know of a fund setup to help pay Dawit's expenses? I assume he has rent, etc. and of course, will need $ for rehab. I would like to join with others in helping to keep things going while he is getting care and I think his University friends will know what is needed. If you could post information on this site, that would be helpful
I knew this man and he was a very nice guy. He always went out of his way for people.
does anyone have any updates on Dawit's condition?
the update is he is very slowly getting better.
As Suzanne asked in a previous post - has a fund been set up to assist? I suspect many in the neighborhood he lived and his school community would be very interested in contriubting.
I cannot seem to find updates from any of the other sites or our main paper, it seems this incident has been swept under the rug, maybe in attempt to maintain that crime is not up when in fact, it's ridiculously 'up'.
If you can continue to update us on his condition here, it would be very appreciated. I don't know him, but my heart is just sick behind this.
thanks for the update...me and Dawit worked together for a few years down at the movie theater...ive been in agony not being able to find out any new updates so thanks again..pls keep updating as possible. Dawit is in mine and many of his other ex co workers prayers every night.
I'm also interested in how Dawit is doing and what kind of effort there is to help him. I live 3 blocks from him on Beacon Hill.
I also am concerned that there's been no follow-up in the Seattle Times - it does seems to be swept under some carpet (as in - what about the other suspects and Dawit's health prognosis?).
I hate to think of what his family is going through with so little direct community response - but, I have no way to contact/help them.
A fund is being set-up. He worked at a lavish senior care home, THE SUMMIT in Capital Hill, and everybody loved him there (rightly so). I'm confident that his fund will receive healthy donations.
Hope to post it here soon.
The Summit has set up a fund to help Dawit and his Family.
You may send checks to the

I knew Dawit from High school, and he is truly the nicest person. Everyone loved the guy, how could this unfortunate tragedy happen to someone so undeserving. He has a great personality, and is just one of those people you know you can count on to give give helping hand. I couldn't believe it when I had heard this horrible news. Very true. There is nothing more annoying thanunsolicited advice. If a person isn’t asking you for help or advice, it’s none of your business to intrude.
I totally agree with you.

I will pray for him.
