Science and Math Student Research News


Seattle Central will have three students presenting at the Undergraduate Research Symposium at the UW on May 15th from noon-5pm.

The students will have poster presentations at either the noon-1pm or 2:30 – 3:30pm session. There is more on the schedule at this website: http://www.washington.edu/research/urp/symp/schedule/schedule.html


Here is some information on the students presenting. All three students have been working with their mentors for the past two quarters to prepare for this event.


Pauline Houx

Mentor: Gregg Harbaugh, UW Educational Psychology/SCCC Mathematics

Motivation of math students at the community college: does the personal epistemological beliefs determine the type of motivation?


Leslie Ratzlaff-Minkler

Mentor: Vanessa Jacobs-Lorena, UW/Seattle Biomedical Research Institute

Molecular and cellular biology of Malaria

Note – Leslie has been accepted to Seattle U for Fall 2009.


Nick Stelzenmuller

Mentor: Timothy Briggs, UW Materials Science and Engineering

Stress analysis and critical engineering components

Note – Nick plans to transfer to the UW for Fall 2009. Timothy is a former SCCC student who transferred to the UW and is very close to completing his PhD in Material Sciences and Engineering.
