Jamiee Smith now attends classes at Seattle Central Community College and works for the school's department of women's programs, helping students identify educational goals and serving low-income parents. She said it is a way to give back, to pave the way for other people.
"I can identify with whoever walks in the door because I've been there. Even if it hasn't happened directly to me -- drug problems, abuse, whatever -- it's affected me in some way," Smith said.
Smith is studying social human services and hopes to work with disadvantaged youth after she graduates. She would like to work with teen parents, maybe even have her own organization. One day, Smith said, she will give back just as much as what she has been helped by others.
